Black screen on IPTV: where do you start?
Your channel is on, but the picture stays black — while your internet and menu do work. The cause is almost always one of these 3: decoder settings, resolution/HDMI or the channel itself. Work through the list below from top to bottom.
1. Turn off hardware decoding
In most IPTV apps (TiviMate, Smarters, XCIPTV) hardware decoding / ExoPlayer is on. On some TVs and boxes that gives a black picture. Set it to software decoding or the VLC decoder and test again.
2. Adjust the buffer setting
Set the buffer in your app to 1-2 seconds. Buffers that are too low give an instant black screen on a stuttering internet connection. See also our buffering guide.
3. Test another channel
Is the picture black on all channels? Then it is the app or the connection. On some channels? Then the channel is down — report it to your provider and see if it comes back later.
4. HDMI and resolution (TV/box)
- Pull out the HDMI cable and plug it back in firmly (or try another port).
- Set your box/TV resolution lower: 1080p50 instead of 4K or 2160p, or the other way around.
- Turn off HDMI-CEC / Anynet+ if the picture flickers or disappears.
5. Restart the device completely
A full restart solves a surprising amount: TV/box unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in. Then open the IPTV app again.
6. Turn VPN off (or on)
Some providers block VPN traffic — turn your VPN off and test again. In other cases (ISP blocks) IPTV actually works better with a VPN. Try both.
7. Test another app or player
Install VLC and open your M3U link (Media → Network stream). If the channel works in VLC, then the issue is in your IPTV app settings.
8. Check your subscription or server
Is nothing working at all anymore? Check with your provider whether your subscription is active and whether there is maintenance/server trouble. Sometimes a channel sits on a server that temporarily drops out.
Frequently asked questions about no picture
Sound works, but no picture — what is this?
Often a codec problem: switch your app to software decoding or a different player (VLC). Also test whether the channel does show a picture in VLC.
Does a VPN help with a black screen?
Sometimes: some providers block VPN traffic (turn it off then), other ISPs block IPTV (turn it on then). Try both sides.
Why does 4K not work?
Not all channels are truly 4K and not every box can handle 4K frames. Set your box to 1080p and test again.
Black screen on one channel but the rest works?
Then that channel is probably down or has a temporary fault. Report it to your provider and wait a moment.
